Best of Mastically Shirleycious*

Bumping this to the top as our readership has gone up significantly and more people are commenting:

We all know there's a best place to go for something; be it pizza, Chinese food, or Italian heroes.

What makes a "Best of" list? If it's food, it's the quality and the price. If it's anything else, its usually the atmosphere.

So post the "Best Place to ... " here. Make sure it's in the area (Mastics, Shirley, and the rest of the South Shore from Blue Point to East Moriches). We want to get the word out on the best places to go here in the area.

For heros, I've found that no one, NO ONE, beats "Hero Haven", on Neighborhood Rd.

The heros are always on fresh bread, (toasted garlic bread if you like - my favorite) the size is more than I can eat (I share mine with my wife), the hot wings, salads, well, you get my drift.

Family owned, Rob Sr. and Rob Jr. , should be commended. Great job guys.

Editor said...

Yes Tonytee! I must agree, Hero Haven is the best. The Haven 1 is my favorite, I don't even bother looking at what else is on the menu. Roast beef, melted mozzarella on garlic bread with gravy on it! Ah, now I'm hungry!

Anonymous said...

Get out of town! Seriously TJ's beats them ANYDAY!! A delicious italian hero w/ the works from tj's takes the cake!!

Editor said...

@anon,

TJs is OK. But they can get a little expensive. I live pretty close to it so I guess I'm just a bit tired of them.

Anonymous said...

Best chinese resturnat in the mastic shirley area would have to be New Rooster Kitchen on Neighborhood rd..

Editor said...

Can't say I've been to New Rooster. I like Ding How (I think that's the name) by Surrey Circle. But they don't deliver.

Anonymous said...

Best pizza is that pizza place in kohl's shopping center.

Best chinese is that one all the way down william floyd next to 711 (near the beach).

Best Italian food is Onofrios.

Best diner is William Floyd diner.

Editor said...

William Floyd Diner? Blagh! I had breakfast there twice and neither time impressed me. First time my scrambled eggs were burnt, and the second time it took almost an hour to get our food -- and the place was empty.

Disastronaut said...

OKAY, i'll make it easy for you and settle this once and for all:

BEST HERO: HERO HAVEN , neighborhood rd. mastic beach. those motherfuckers are so goddamn nice, its priced right and they have a wide selection of beer. it's a goddamn dream come true. Does TJ's have any of that? no. they suck balls when it comes to customer service, their heros are over priced and they have NO BOOZE.

BEST ASIAN FOOD: GOURMET GARDEN, Montauk Hwy, Center Moriches.
best local asian fusion place at a reasonable price. Tony's in east moriches is also good but i find them to be a bit too expensive..

BEST PIZZA: JOHN'S PIZZERIA, neighborhood rd. Mastic beach. it just is... but then again, Hero Haven is putting in Pizza ovens this week, which its pretty fucking cool. it looks like its going to be HERO HAVEN FOR THE WIN!

Disastronaut said...

also i think this page needs to be linked to the homepage. there is still too much that needs to be said...

also-

BEST DINER: WILLIAM FLOYD DINER, William Floyd parkway, Shirley. Best goddamn breakfast around. i wouldn't touch anything else fro there though... because i haven't had to the breakfast there is THAT DAMN GOOD

Editor said...

Yup, yup. Hero Haven FTW! They own or pwn or whatever TJs.

Wow, it's kinda sad that the only good places around here deal with food.

Disastronaut said...

yeah, it is kinda depressing. how nice would it be to have a decent pub, club, or SOME sort of night scene or recreation (is the billiard hall happening or was that just speculation?) it's unfortunate that there isn't a decent place for people to get together, unless you count Shirley Lanes (*meh*). all of the existing bars only have bud and bud light as their exclusive beers on tap. that says a lot about a bar. oh, and i like that there's regular stabbings at lindsa torres (sp?) on neighborhood rd. maybe this is why we cant have nice things. a knife in yer chest doesn't make a good nightcap, ya know?

Editor said...

I disagree. A stab in your chest is just what you need when you're trying to not pay attention to the fact that you have to pee badly.

"I really have to pee"

::stab::

"I don't have to pee anymore"

Voila!

As for the billiards, I know someone who's throwing that idea around in his head. How serious is he? I don't know. But he felt in love with Slate in NYC and wants something like that. Not as fancy though, but definitely not a dive either.

Disastronaut said...

it would be wonderful if there was a classy place like that in Shirley.

thats right, "classy" and "Shirley" in the same sentence. And if they can exist in the same sentence, well, just imagine....

Anonymous said...

Hey did everyone forget about Jimmys Diner on montauk hwy in mastic ????? You cant beat the price and family atmosphere... Breakfast there is delish... its small and sometimes paced but def. worth the wait..

Anonymous said...

im meant the place is small.. and sometimes packed... sorry for the spelling...

Disastronaut said...

I've never eaten there, i suppose i will soon. has anybody been to violet cove (or whatever they're calling it now) resturant? i went biking by there the other day and it is deserted/ looks empty. is it just closed for the season or shut for good?

Anonymous said...

I visited violet cove (((once)))... back maybe 3 years ago.. it was a divey bar.. and a horrible resturant.. def. not worthy for the best of list...

Editor said...

You can fit 5 people inside Jimmy's Diner if you give staff the day off.

As for Violet Cove, I wrote about it here (right click to view in another window or tab). Shame about the place because I think it has potential.

Anonymous said...

I have to agree with Jimmy's Diner being the best in the area, despite the small size.

Also, TJs whoops hero haven's ass.

As far as pizza places...none of them around here really excite me.

That is all.

Anonymous said...

We had hero haven last night, I am and have always been a TJS fan... (I wrote the earlier post about tj's takes the cake... ) but i wanted to see what the hype was all about.. I compared TJs italian hero with Hero havens Italian Stalion. The winner By FAR is TJS, hands down. I grade by quality. The cut and freshness of a tj's hero is above and beyond what hero haven made for me last night... I cant comment on the pizza which has newly arrived to hero haven last night. I was there when the first slice was sold... so good luck with the pizza because the heroes just dont got it in my opinion..

Editor said...

No one's mentioned Mikes or Manor House. Guess we're not fans? Manor House has kareoke nights which is so 90's but still enjoyable.

Anonymous said...

Mikes Hotwing wings are banging as well as the mussels.. yum

Anonymous said...

I love Mikes and Manor House. Both have decent food. If I had to pick one it would be Mikes Place. The food, the service are excellent.

anonymous said...

I gave Hero Haven a few tries because I like to promote locally and was disappointed every time. There so called "mamas meatballs" are dried-out and tasteless. Subway has better meatballs. They lured you in the beginning with free iced tea and low-priced heros and now they charge more than TJs. They are overpriced considering the quality. If they plan to make pizza it's only because it's pizzaville out here and they want a piece of the pie, I mean action. TJ's could use a scrubbing and a makeover, but they do make the best tuna salad. John's pizza is a greasy, gross mess(but you do get the sweat for free). Barbara's Kitchen...I won't even go there. The new bread store, horrific bagels. The greek joint is good though. If you know good food you realize what lousy food establishments exist here.

Editor said...

Is John's the pink one on Neighborhood Rd? Oh yeah, that place is the best if you want some extra grease clogging your arteries. There's a place I've been meaning to go to on Moriches (across from McDonald's and next to Subway's. I forget the name) that's Italian. BTW, the best Subway's to go to is the one in Moriches. The one off Montauk in Shirley is gross.

Johnny Pee said...

Straight up, you want Neighborhood history, go to The Sandbar. They have a Sawfish nose (chainsaw looking thing) hanging on the wall that the owner told me was from a catch just where the Moriches Inlet was before the Moriches Inlet was there. The Inlet busted open I believe during the Hurricane of '38. Also the interior has origional woodwork covered in years of use. I just wish their tap selection was better.

Anonymous said...

also live herpes and the clap playing every friday and saturday and wednesday nights at the sand bar..

Johnny Pee said...

I didn't drop down to my knees at The Sandbar this time around so I wasn't lucky enough to get either.

Editor said...

I've never heard of Live Herpes and The Band. Are they the ones who sing All Day I Dream About Syphilis?

Anonymous said...

Jamies Pizza on Moriches Middle Island Rd is without question the best. He has been there for 20 years and makes some kick ass subs to.

Anonymous said...

How can some of you people say that this town has bad food establishments!!! Get the Fuhgeddaboutit out of here!!! I have spent a lot of time in the boroughs for the past 4 years only to realize the Pizza, Chinese and well Diner food is in Mastics. Yeah thats right, I said Mastics.

I confess, some places blow, but you just need to know where to go

FOR PIZZA
Savarona Pizza is awesome - Shop/Stop Kohls center

John's Pizzeria - Mastic Beach Neighborhood Rd Pink House

Nino's Pizzeria - Best Sicilian

HEROS = TJ's hands down

Chinese- Nothing better than Ding How's or w/e in Surrey Circle

Diner Food= Jimmy's and if you go down the road a tiny bit in pseudo Moriches area Moriches Bay Diner

MORE TO COME NEXT COMMENT WILL BE SIT DOWN PLACES

If some of you morons would stop visiting Fast Food alley once in a while and explore the tons of places we have, you might see things in a different light. Punks!

Anonymous said...

It's obvious your taste buds are conditioned to eating all the garbage, so much so you can't think straight. Yes, TJ's is good and so is Mikes, Mediterranean Kitchen, and that Greek take out right near that Moriches Diner, etc. However, John's "no-selection" greasified pizza is a tragedy. And who thought a big pink pizza parlor was aesthetically pleasing? It's an embarrassing eyesore. And Nino's Sicilian? Please, pizza has evolved Mr. Taste Deprived or whoever you are. Nobody out here can make a decent Grandma pie either. I suppose the best pizza comes from Toninos (pricey though).

Tonytee said...

Hey Disastronaut,
You don't know what the circumstances were behind the stabbing at Linnsa Torrs, so you should back off - bad happens all over buddy, and when Shultze's was open, cops were ALWAYS there.

Local Chinese food that delivers - I like Chun Bo - fast and very nice people.

Wm. Floyd Diner is a dump - had 2 cups of coffee, both with a shitload of grinds - yuck! They were better when they were Pancake Cottage.

Italian food - nobody beats Mama lisa - fresh food, huge portions, much more reasonably priced than Onofrios. (I saw the girlfriend of the owner of Onofrio mix grape soda with wine, and had the balls to call it a Sicillian Spritzer - is she nuts?)

For real New York style pizza, Nino's still has the market - THIN CRUST, CRISPY, AND AS CLOSE TO BROOKLYN PIZZA AS YOU CAN GET OUT HERE.

T.J.'s blows - high priced, much smaller subs than Hero Haven, who now rules in my opinion for best subs on Long Island.

Disastronaut said...

I think it was detailed in the news that the man who was stabbed was trying to prevent the stabber from beating the woman he was with. And that's only the circumstance of one of the TWO stabbings that have occured there in recent memory. Why so defensive? Did you know the knife weilding loony?

Anonymous said...

TJ's is the worst. Good god. Terrible bread meat ratio.

Pizza? I go to la Margherita Pizzeria off Horseblock. So worth it :)

QUOTE: There's a place I've been meaning to go to on Moriches (across from McDonald's and next to Subway's. I forget the name) that's Italian.

It's called La Volpe. I haven't had any dinners there, but it used to be called Anton's, and they moved to their current location from being next to King Kullen in Center Moriches. They have the BEST slice of regular pizza in the area.

Anonymous said...

TJ's has some of the best heroes around, but they're pricey. Plus, their customer service sucks in 2 out of their 3 locations (Middle Island is good because the guy's nice and no one ever goes there).

Best pizza in the Mastic/Shirley area? Probably Tonino's or Savarona.

For Chinese, I kinda like Tung Hoi on the corner of Montauk and Titmus only because their diet chicken fried rice is simple but awesome with duck sauce. Also, their soups aren't bad.

Also, to the yokel who posted that La Margherita in Medford has good pizza: It's not even the best pizza place on that stretch of Station Road. Cafe Gia in the S&S shopping center walks circles around them.

Anonymous said...

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the fact that lots of people have gotten food poisoning at TJ's.

I like Bill's All American (near the library and bowling alley). Their food is consistent and I've been eating there for years.

Editor said...

I guess you haven't been there in months because Bill's is no more.

Anonymous said...

Hero havens delivery sucks tried them twice and both times fucked up. Also, ummmm, Hero Haven was stealing hero bread out of TJ's dumpsters for a while . I would never eat at Hero haven again after that came to light. TJ's is pricey , but best hero around here. Best heros Ive had are in Holbrook at Oven Lovin. Poor selection, but best hero you will get for the money. Also, best Pizza on Long Island, Sun Vet mall acorss from Pathmark inside the mall. After that pizza you will want no other. All agree AFTER they eat it.

Anonymous said...

Pat at FireIsland pizzeria makes a great cooked onion pie...he's been there over 35 years.Onofrios makes a good pie also.Mama Lisa for a grandma pie.Happy House Chinese take-out in Mastic by the movie theatre makes the best sesame chicken.Favorite restaurant is Painters in Brookhaven Hamlet...if you haven't been there try it.

TonyTee said...

Fire Island Pizza is ALWAYS empty -I've been in the area on and off since 1969 - that place always sucked!

Had Ding Hows as take out once - was not impressed. Also, that entire complex is owned by Mrs. Sing - wife of that doctor in Center Moriches, and the plumbing in many of those establishments in that complex had severe issues - the dry cleaners, who is now owned by two brothers that own another dry cleaners in Smithtown, had no working plumbing in it for some time, as well as heat issues.
I always felt a little uneasy eating in a place I know is owned by slumlords - claenliness comes to my mind first.
And whoever the person above is that said Hero Haven steals TJ';s bread is obviously lying. You should stop adding to the rumors this area is nortorious for. If you don't like them, fine.

Anonymous said...

It seems that Hero Haven and TJ's is a draw. I really taste little difference between the two. I guess what ever establishment is closer to your home gets your business.

Also, Savarona, Nino's, John's and Fire Island Pizza are all good. I think they are the best in town.

Mike's Place is a good burger at reasonable prices. I do not see why we have some haters on this board, we have good food in this town. I spent so much time in the city over the past four years and the food sucks there now, well at least in Manhattan, BK and Queens still have some tasty joints.

Anonymous said...

TJ Heros is the biggest con game. Their skimping big time on their portions. Their heros are now $8.00 (keep raising your prices and watch business fade like the meat you forget to put in your heros.) You get a half-filled hero because they're cheating the customer that way...believe it. YOU GET MOSTLY BREAD!!! Hero Haven is getting better all the time. They worked out a lot of kinks. Their store is so nice, their super friendly and you gotta try the food from their pizza area. I was surprised how good it was...great advertised prices too.

Anonymous said...

Hero heaven is the shit....i got a sil pie 12 knots 2liter soda for 9.95 !!!!!no coupon needed.i used to be a fan of tjs but they are dead to me now.i bring a hero in once a week from hero heaven and i get about 10 people saying wow where did you get that???looks and smells good

Anonymous said...

Nino's has the best pizza in town. I prefer TJ's for heroes but as said by someone else they're a bit pricey. Chinese, I'll take New Rooster Kitchen any day!

Anonymous said...

Definitely Nino's! Whenever I've gone to either John's or Fire Island Pizza, it's given me bad diarrhea. I never have that problem with Nino's!

nae said...

Mama Lisa in Mastic right off of Montauk Hwy. Dinners are excellent. We live near Smithpoint beach and we pass a few Italian restaurants to get to Mama Lisa.

todd said...

put an italian hero from tj's and an italian hero from hero haven on a scale... the one from hero haven is more than twice the size, and almost half the price.. nice try lenny

Anonymous said...

Have gotten Chinese from Rooster Kitchen a few times...like the cold sesame noodles. Went one day last week to get an order and it was horrible, they must have changed owners since the last time I was there. Will not go back again!

Anonymous said...

Lmao you all crack me up . Im going put this plain and simple... TJ's i grew up eating i love their heros! But they are too pricy and need to adjust their prices accordingly. HERO HAVEN ehh theyre okayy... I wouldnt take a bullet for their food but i do have to admit their texan is really good :) as far as diners the WILLIAM FLOYD DINER seems to think its okayy to serve beverages with garbage in them . NEVER AGAIN! moriches bay is where i stay! Good pizza around here ehh i guess ninos but for the best pizza clear a day out and go to brooklyn. L&B SPUMONI GARDEN! that pizza will blow your mindd! Thats real pizza i dont care what anyone says as for chinese happy house on montauk hwy! But honestly i skieve chinese food and their stores all together! Uhmm i think thats about it kay bye :)
