3 Arrested For Alleged Hate Crime In Mastic Beach

Suffolk County Police have arrested three individuals for Aggravated Harassment 2nd Degree for an incident which occurred on Gooseberry Drive in Mastic Beach on Monday, June 29, 2009, at 7:05 p.m.

Seventh Precinct officers responded to a call to 911 reporting a fight on Gooseberry Drive . Three people had attacked the victim and while kicking, hitting and pushing the victim had made numerous anti-gay remarks about the victim’s sexual orientation.

Hate Crimes detectives charged Nora Mitzner, 21, of 194 Dune Road, Westhampton Beach; Lindsay McBeth, 25, of 3151 Route 112, Medford; and Selwyn Icangelo, 20, of 239 Commack Road, Mastic Beach; all with Aggravated Harassment 2 nd Degree.

The defendants will be held pending arraignment at First District Court, Central Islip, on Tuesday morning.

A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

More from Newsday:

The victim told police she had been "taking pictures of cars" coming and going at a neighborhood home, a law enforcement source told Newsday, adding that was "the flash point" for the attack. The "hate element" of the attack raised the charges from harassment to aggravated harassment, police said. The incident also has been reported to the U.S. Department of Criminal Justice, police said.

Meanwhile, Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy condemned the alleged attack.

"In Suffolk County," he said, "we stand united in denouncing violent and abusive acts against a person because of their race, creed, ethnicity or sexual orientation."

This is no different than what happened to Anthony Torres, with the exception that the alleged perpetrators were not friends with Kate Browning.

I love it that only ONE of these people are actually living in Mastic Beach! The others are from Westhampton and Medford -- But, WE (the people of Mastic, Mastic Beach and Shirley), WILL GET THE BAD RAP!! AS USUAL!!!!!!

I hate Mastic. I know the " victim". She has always been a conniving person who will rather see another suffer than accept consequences of her own guilt. word on the street is that she's boasting about how she "battered" icangelo's girlfriend's car and beat up Nora Mitzner for thinking she can be a "superhero". I feel sorry for "the suspects" because I know how far "the B****" will go to win. I just hope they are strong enough to not let the media intimidate them into thinking they are losers. Gay or not, a liar is a liar.
