More Construction To Come?

The county isn’t standing down on standing water, especially on its roads.

The Suffolk County Department of Public Works has hired Hauppauge-based VHB Engineering, Surveying and Landscape Architecture for the design of sidewalks and drainage improvement along William Floyd Parkway in Mastic and Shirley.

Used by thousands of drivers every day, the road has been plagued by persistent flooding.

VHB, which stands Vanasse Hangen Brustlin, recommended constructing new concrete curbs and sidewalks, adjusting drainage castings and re-grading the shoulder on both sides of the road. VHB has also proposed re-grading of the roadway shoulder to provide for the flow of flooding areas into existing drainage structures.

The 60 professionals at VHB have been busy on some of the Island’s biggest projects, like the Lighthouse mixed-use redevelopment in Uniondale and Heartland Town Square plan for the former Pilgrim property in Brentwood.

VHB, which has its national headquarters in Watertown, Mass., recently opened a Manhattan office to support on-call services to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey for assignments at Newark, JFK, LaGuardia and Stewart airports.
