All In The Family

Yesterday Suffolk County Police, in a joint investigation with Riverhead Police, arrested a mother and son for identity theft of Suffolk County residents, some of whom are deceased.

Identity Theft Unit detectives worked with Riverhead Police detectives on cases that appeared to have similarities. With additional information from the United States Postal Inspection Service, police revealed a family identity theft business, involving a mother and her son.

Detectives executed search warrants at the homes of Tonia Cheeseman, 63, of 370 Larchmont Court, Ridge, and her son, Michael Cheeseman, 41, of 456 Avondale Drive, Shirley. Tonia Cheeseman was charged with three counts of Identity Theft 2nd Degree and one count of Scheme to Defraud 1st Degree. Michael Cheeseman was charged with three counts of Identity Theft 2nd Degree, Scheme to Defraud 1st Degree, Assault 3rd Degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon 4th Degree. The assault charge was in reference to a domestic incident.

The Cheesemans used the personal information to make various purchases.

Identity Theft detectives and Riverhead Police detectives will continue investigating the Cheesemans to locate additional victims and families of the deceased victims. The stolen identities include those of some Florida residents, where the Cheesemans lived before moving to Suffolk County. Damn Floridians!!

Tonia and Michael Cheeseman were held overnight at the Sixth Precinct and arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip today.
